Over the Thanksgiving break, I read the Ghost Map The Story of London’s Most Terrifying Epidemic—and How It Changed Science, Cities, and the Modern World by Stephen Johnson. This is the story how John Snow convinced the London health authorities that the Cholera epidemic was not caused by bad air (miasma), but was caused by contaminated drinking water. Johnson does an excellent job describing what life was like in London during the middle of the 19th century. …
